DJ Shadow booted off decks in Miami Wed, 19 Dec 2012 04:39:28 +0000 post thumbnail

A few days ago InTheMix reported that DJ Shadow was asked to stop mid set in Miami night club Mansion, seemingly as the music was ‘too hard’.

It all went down on Saturday the 15th December, apparently only 20 minutes in to his set for Shadow’s ‘All Basses Covered’ tour. To the crowds amazement and outrage, Shadow politely left the stage, but not before stating “I’ve waited a long time to play here, but they said this shit is too future for all y’all”, he was playing Krampfhaft’s ‘Spit Thunder’ at the time of being asked to get off.

What is the club scene coming too when the venue decides what gets played or not? DJing has long been about the crowd, and a good DJ, as we all know, will play what the crowd wants. Shadow rightfully stated on twitter following the incident: “I don’t care if I get kicked out of every rich kid club on the planet…I will never sacrifice my integrity as a DJ…ever”. Well said. He went on to state “I appreciate everyone’s support. Obviously I should have never been booked there in the first place. Square peg in a round hole, etc” and “Ironically it was drum and bass that broke the camel’s back(!) Note to self…play more drum and bass!!!”

Funnily enough Miami local DJ Craze is playing this Friday night at the same club and I don’t think I have seen Craze play a set (and I have seen him live a handfull of times) without smashing some drum n bass.

Check out the article on InTheMix here and their follow up article that he will be releasing the set in question publicly soon.

Beats Antique: Contraption Vol. II Review Thu, 15 Nov 2012 23:44:53 +0000

post thumbnail

Beats Antique’s newest EP, Contraption vol. II, is another experimental tangle of genres that incites vivid imagery and an urge to dance. The heavy dub basslines splashed with world inspired melodies are familiar from Beats Antique’s previous albums; however, Contraption vol. II seems to tell a darker story, with only occasional glimpses of the happier grooves reminiscent of previous songs such as Roustabout.

The album opens with “The Allure”, in which bells and a violin playing an airy melody are violently interrupted after 30sec when heavy hip-hop drums roar in over the top. This concoction of heavy bass topped with floating high notes, along with suggestive starts, stops and sudden direction changes, sets the scene for the album.

“Crooked Muse” featuring Lynx, strays from the usual path. With an absence of electronic tracking and Lynx’s seductive drawl a key feature, “Crooked Muse” is a meandering ballad telling of a tragic love.

The final two tracks, “Busto Balkans” and “Bloody Bones”, bring back the circusy tones that feature in many of Beats Antique’s previous works; however a darker story still prevails, with minor tones and sad laughter interrupting the nostalgic circus jingles and weaving the final tracks into the feel of the rest of the album.

All in all Contraption vol. II is a successful continuation of Beats Antique’s musical experiments that, with its muddle of genres, instruments and sounds, showcases the talents of the worldly multi-instrumentalists that are Beats Antique. While Contraption vol. II does have more minor undertones and invoke images of a darker world than Beats Antique’s previous works, it is still thoroughly dancable and 100% enjoyable.

Dedicated Beatheads Unite! Thu, 07 Jun 2007 13:26:37 +0000 post thumbnail

I was over at the old turntable radio site today, and to my pleasure they have posted a new podcast. This month it has been taken over by DJ Scientist & DJ Snatchatec AKA The Dedicated Beatheads. The podcast features a smooth new Turntable Radio intro thanks to DJ Baku, I personally quite like the dark beat with the layered melodic sounds – nice work on that one Baku and TTR.

Dedicated Beatheads Sound Convention Vol 1

The rest of the podcast that follows definitely excites, with beats & shards of scratches that encompass a newer sound of turntablism production that grabs you. In some ways it reminds me of a style that is something similar to Ninja Tune thrown into a blender with Q-Berts Wave Twisters. A fair portion of the cast is an excerpt from The Dedicated Beatheads album Sound Convention Volume 1 but also contains tracks from the archives of DJ Scientist & DJ Snatchatec’s combined work.

Make sure you check out The Dedicated Beatheads podcast on Turntable Radio. Check out The Dedicated Beatheads website for more info on and to buy Sound Conventions Vol 1. Also check out the DJ Scientist & DJ Snatchatec individual websites for more of their work.

An intimate night with

DJ SHADOW & MC Gift of Gab (Blackalicious)

Daddy G [Massive Attack] & Dexter

This is a rare showcase and tickets are strictly limited.

Full Live Visual Show feat. MC Gift Of Gab (Blackalicious)

Hailing from California’s Bay Area, the elite DJ Shadow is set to deliver a not-to-be-missed, distinctive live performance alongside longtime comrade Gift of Gab (Blackalicious) at Melbourne institution, The Forum, on June 7th.

Ensconced as one of San Francisco’s most instrumental personas in the Bay Area movement, DJ Shadow is the embodiment of the city’s spirit, a temperament paralleled by sister city Melbourne and articulated by Melburnians. Suitably, after his previous sell out Outsider tour, DJ Shadow invites MC Gift of Gab to be a part of a fresh, carefully crafted showcase for Melbourne, an audience armed with an artistic intellect to relish in the full spectrum of imagination and all it brings to light.

Shadow and Gift of Gab are a united creative force to be reckoned who share a sentiment for progressive independent artistry. They were fellow crew members in the early day and founders of the underground award winning hip hop label SoleSides later reinvented as hip hop collective Quannum Records; the label under which Gift of Gab (as one half of Blackalicious) released Nia (2000) and Blazing Arrow (2002) as well as first solo album 4th Dimensional Rocketships Going Up (2004).

Perched alongside the current dons of the hip hop world including The Neptunes, Dr. Dre and Timbaland; DJ Shadow’s gamut of creative works range from trip hop and ethereal soundscapes through to rocking west coast hip hop, including his most recent collaboration with Q-Tip (A Tribe Called Quest).

DJ Shadow’s legendary live performance is an amazing spectacle enhanced by visuals, coupled with MC Gift of Gab, this is definitely a show that will leave you in awe and aching for more. And this may also be your last chance to see Shadow on these shores for several years to come so best be quick.

Catch the Shadow before he disappears!

Enter(tain) the meatmarket Sun, 20 May 2007 22:51:11 +0000 post thumbnail

I’m not a huge fan of house music, but Sampleslaya – Enter the meat market from house legend Armand Van Helden is a turntablist / producer / DJs dream. It integrates catchy and funky beats produced amongst classic hip hop samples that can be used by DJ’s / producers spinning hip hop, house or straight up funky turntablism (an album worthy of owning doubles of! Juggle it up!!). Check it out on Amazon to listen to some of the tracks.

It doesn’t seem so easy to find on vinyl but if you look hard enough you will find (I just stumbled across this in a Brooklyn record store after looking for years and almost giving up hope – actually I found it on but it was a bit pricey. The copy I picked up was mint with a slightly damaged cover – for only US$5).

2tall presents Dudley & Georgia ‘Beautiful Mindz’ LP Fri, 27 Apr 2007 06:23:29 +0000 post thumbnail

DJ 2Tall - 'Beautiful Mindz' LP Cover

The latest release from the Eclectic Breaks record label is a new long
player produced by 2tall (Jim Coles), featuring Dudley Perkins (aka
Declaime) and Georgia Anne Muldrow on vocal duties. This is a unique
UK/USA collaboration project that combines intelligent lyrics, free
thinking, poetic verse and skilled studio productions, to result in an
incredibly fresh, poignant and positive album.

The album’s title ‘Beautiful Mindz’ is a message to the listeners that
we are capable of much more than we think, and the project itself
reflects that it’s not difficult to put together a unique album of
music with people from other parts of the planet. From their initial
acquaintance to the albums completion, the whole experience was natural
and organic as all great partnerships are.

Originally known for his accolades in the DJ championship world, where
he took home the title of UK DMC Team Champions in 2003 with his crew
the Trusicians, 2tall has been making a name for himself as a producer
over the past few years. His release discography already includes two
albums; ‘Shifting Tides’ on Needlework Records and ‘Loose Ends For
Divination’ on Eclectic Breaks, plus his recent DJ battle tool
‘Peaceful Warrior’, along with several mix CDs, EP’s and 12” releases.
Dudley Perkins is best known for his releases on US label Stones Throw
Records, where he lends his unique voice to many of Madlib’s
productions. Highlights from his releases include the single ‘Flowers’
and album ‘Expressions (2012 A.U.)’, plus the album ‘Illmindmuzik’ as
Declaime on Good Vibe Recordings. Georgia Anne Muldrow is also
associated with Stones Throw, and is their only female signing. Noticed
early on by fellow LA hip hop trendsetters Sa Ra, as well as Detroit’s
Platinum Pied Pipers, the buzz created saw her sound reach the airwaves
of Worldwide with Gilles Peterson on the BBC, and to Peanut Butter
Wolf, who signed her to a two-album deal on Stones Throw, where she
recently released ‘Olesi: Fragments Of An Earth’. ‘Beautiful Mindz’ is
the first ever project from these three combined talents.

From the album’s epic bell chime intro, you know there is a serious
listening experience ahead. Dudley’s striking vocal commands attention
as he speaks about the state of the world, the “fonk”, and the upcoming
year 2012, which many ancient cultures have predicted as a time of
great changes in human evolution. Tracks such as ‘Atall’, ‘Poet Past
The Weak’ and ‘U R’ explore this subject matter further, with 2tall’s
beats providing the perfect carriage for the poignant lyrics. ‘U R’ in
particular offers guidance and positivity to a confused society, that
is often mislead by false idols and the media. There are no lectures or
preaching going on here though, the listener is simply invited to take
what they want from the message conveyed.

Georgia Anne Muldrow’s addictively original vocals take centre stage on
‘Aint That Strange’, whilst elsewhere, tracks such as ‘A Beautiful
Mind’, ‘Newniss’, and ‘Fonkwitme’ balance great songwriting, deep
lyrics and soulful musicality.

Wrapped together with intro’s skits and outro’s, ‘Beautiful Mindz’ is a
stunning album package that will be played again and again for years to

Turntablism Thu, 24 Nov 2005 08:11:22 +0000 post thumbnail

Turntablism is a subgenre of hip hop. One who engages in turntablism is a turntablist: a term perhaps created in 1994 by DJ Supreme, from New Rochelle, NY, to describe the difference between a DJ who just lets records play, and one who actually manipulates the sounds of a record.

Turntablists are DJs who use vinyl disc records, and turntable techniques like scratching or beat juggling in the composition of original musical works. Turntablism is generally focused more on turntable technique and less on mixing, rapping or vocal delivery. Some turntablists seek to have themselves recognized as a legitimate musician capable of interacting and improvising with other performers.

Turntables were actually first used as musical instruments in the 1940’s and 1950’s by musique concrete and other experimental composers, such as John Cage and Pierre Schaeffer, who used them in a manner similar to digital sampling. (Even earlier, Edgard Varese experimented with turntables in 1930, though he never produced any works using them) Modern experimental turntablists include Christian Marclay, Otomo Yoshihide, Philip Jeck and Janek Schaefer.

Hip hop DJs developed independently of the earlier techniques, and the sounds produced by these experimental composers are quite different from later hip-hop turntablism.

Turntable Contests / DJ Battles Thu, 24 Nov 2005 07:53:34 +0000 Like many other musical instrumentalists, turntablists compete to see who can develop the fastest, most innovative and most creative approaches to their instrument. The selection of a champion comes from the culmination of battles between turntablists.

Battling involves each turntablist performing a routine (a combination of tricks) within a limited time period, after which, the routine is judged by a panel of expert judges. The winner is selected based upon score. The organized competitions, evolved from actual old school “battles where DJs challenged each other at parties, and the “judge was the simple fact that everybody knew who really was best, and often the winner kept the losers equipment and/or records.
